Born in the second century as a sepulcher for the family of the emperor Hadrian in a peripheral area of the city at the time, it fulfilled this original function until 403 AD approximately, when it is included in the Aurelian walls.

From this moment a ‘second life’ begins in the guise of castellum, a fortress that served as an outpost to protect the city. Numerous Roman families contend for possession: it will be the stronghold of Senator Teofilatto, Crescenzi, Pierleoni and Orsini. It is precisely a Pope Orsini – Niccolò III – who had the famous Passetto di Borgo built, which connects the Vatican to the Castle, in a physical and ideal continuity.

In 1367 the building was handed over to Pope Urban V, to urge the return of the Curia to Rome from the Avignon exile. From this moment on, the strong relation with the ecclesiastic power is evident, which adapts it to a residence in which to take refuge in moments of danger. Thanks to its solid and fortified structure, the Castle houses the Vatican Archives and Treasury, but is also adapted to court and prison.

A curiosity: it is said that right here the artists Bernini and Borromini have left a mark of their rivalry. The statue of the Bernini fountain representing the Rio de la Plata river has one arm raised to shelter itself from the imminent collapse of Palazzo Pamphili, built by Borromini. It is one of the many Roman legends, who knows the thruth?

If Campo de ‘Fiori was nothing but a meadow until 1400, Piazza Navona has its roots long ago.

In fact, as early as 85 AD, the Roman emperor Domitian had the stadium of the same name built there, capable of hosting up to 30,000 spectators. The name of the square was originally “in Agone” (from the Latin in agonis, “games”) since the stadium was used only and exclusively for athletics competitions. In ancient times the square was concave, the closures of the three fountains were blocked and the water came out in order to flood the square.

The playful use of the area continued until the late Renaissance, when it still appears to be used for training and games of chivalry. In this short interval the ownership of the Circus Agonis is divided between private owners and ecclesiastical bodies.

Today, Piazza Navona is one of the symbols of Baroque Rome, thanks to the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (the Fountain of the Four Rivers in the center of the square, which represents the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio della Plata, the four corners of the earth), of the rival Francesco Borromini, of Girolamo Rainaldi (the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, in front of the Bernini fountain) and of Pietro da Cortona (author of the frescoes in the gallery of Palazzo Pamphilj).

A lively place, in the morning an outdoor market where you can find a little bit of everything, fruit, vegetables and culinary specialties, but also clothing. From late afternoon onwards it turns into one of the centers of the Capitoline nightlife, with its numerous bars and restaurants open until late.

A historical mention is in order.

Campo de ‘Fiori, which until the 15th century was precisely a flowery field, was the site of horse races and public executions.

In 1400 Pope Callisto III recovered the neighborhood and it is in this period of restructuring of the area that historic buildings such as the famous Palazzo Orsini are built. The square thus became an area of passage for ambassadors and cardinals and took on a new life, welcoming a thriving horse market, taverns, trade, art and craft centers.

Alongside its vitality, as mentioned, it was also a place of executions. The statue erected in the center of the square reminds us of the Dominican philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burned alive on February 17, 1600 on charges of heresy.

Before entering, for free, inside, you can opt for a break sitting in one of the many restaurants and bars on the square, or on the central fountain … if you can find a spot!

Its history is certainly long, we will see only a few highlights.

The Pantheon dates back to ancient Rome, originally built as a temple dedicated to all divinities. As we can read in the original inscription, the building was founded from in 27 BC. by Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus.

The Latin inscription reads:

M•AGRIPPA•L•F•COS•TERTIVM•FECIT, that is: «Marcus Agrippa, Lucii filius, consul tertium fecit», “It was built by Marco Agrippa, son of Lucio, consul for the third time”

After being damaged by fires, it was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian between 120 and 124 AD.

It is composed of a circular structure joined to a portico in Corinthian columns that support a pediment. The large circular cell, called rotunda, is surrounded by thick masonry walls and eight large pillars on which the weight of the characteristic hemispherical concrete dome is distributed, which houses at its apex a circular opening called oculus, which allows the illumination of the internal environment. The height of the building calculated at the oculus is equal to the diameter of the rotunda, a feature that reflects the classical criteria of balanced and harmonious architecture.

Almost two millennia after its construction, the dome of the Pantheon is still today one of the largest domes in the world, and specifically the largest built in Roman concrete.
